Presentation: Tax Ombud Presenter: Tax Ombud - Judge Bernard Makgabo Ngoepe About the Presenter Judge Bernard Makgabo Ngoepe practised for many years as an attorney and, later, as an advocate, and got appointed Senior Counsel (SC). He also served from 2006 - 2014 as a Judge and Vice-President of the African Union's African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, based in Tanzania. Judge Ngoepe has received numerous awards, citations and honours, including four honorary doctorate degrees and an honorary professorship in law. Currently, he is, amongst others: South Africa’s Tax Ombud; Chair, Appeals Panel of the Press Council; Chair, Appeals Board of the Council for Medical Schemes; Chair, Final Appeals Committee of the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa; Chair, Investigative Unit of Cricket South Africa. Judge Ngoepe has addressed many national and international conferences on tax and other issues.

About the Office of the Tax Ombud The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) was established in October 2013 to enhance the tax administration system. Until then, there was no independent redress channel for taxpayers who had exhausted the normal SARS complaints resolution mechanisms. The OTO provides independent, impartial and free assistance to taxpayers with a service, procedure or administrative tax complaints against the South African Revenue Service (SARS) which could not be resolved through the normal SARS complaints resolution mechanism.
