01. DURBAN PORT COMMITTEE

We focus on port activity development and provide resolution mechanisms.We focus on port activity development and provide resolution mechanisms.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To provide a forum for all stakeholders in the port to meet on a monthly basis to share activity reports;
  • To facilitate the identification of problems for which improved liaison is an appropriate resolution mechanism; 
  • To identify business implications of maintenance and development issues in the harbour and its planned expansions;
  • To examine emergent policies of direct relevance to the port and all its activities, and respond accordingly.

02. ECONOMIC AFFAIRS

We build a deeper understanding of issues around economic planning in eThekwini by making recommendations and examining emergent policies and respond accordingly.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To build a deeper understanding of issues of economic planning in the province and eThekwini Municipality which affect our members;
  • To take a policy position and build the necessary liaison structure with public, private and civil society actors;
  • To facilitate an understanding of the economic drivers of the province and eThekwini Municipality;
  • To examine emergent policies of direct relevance to the Forum, and respond accordingly.

03. ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS

We provide information on environmental legislation and promote sustainability awareness and compliance.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To provide information and facilitate learning on environmental legislation which affects our members;
  • To promote sustainability amongst the membership;
  • To create a network of members who promote and teach environmental awareness and exhibit environmental practices in their businesses; and
  • To promote compliance with environmental legislation and regulation.

04. WOMEN IN BUSINESS

We identify and deal with socio-economic issues faced by women in the workplace and provide structured training, coaching and business mentorship.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To proactively remain abreast of the socio-economic needs of women;
  • To advance the cause of women by engaging various stakeholders;
  • To develop women through structured training, coaching and mentoring businesses;
  • To facilitate the participation of women in non-traditional business sectors; and
  • To create networking platforms for women.

05. MANUFACTURING

We understand the manufacturing environment, as well as to unpack incentives available.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • The Forum has the objective of calling together all local manufacturers within the membership.
  • Understanding the manufacturing environment, as well as the specific needs of the manufacturers in the various sectors.
  • Outlining available Manufacturing related incentives to companies.
  • Participation in the annual KZN Manufacturing Indaba.
  • Participation in the KZN Exporter of the Year Awards.
  • Energy and water efficiency; waste minimisation; automation technologies; and quality control.
  • As well as a workshops on SABS certifications and ISO accreditations.

06. Tourism

We promote Durban as the preferred tourism destination. The tourism sector is a key economic driver by identifying barriers to growth in the industry and determine appropriate strategies and actions to promote growth and development.

  • To develop and maintain an understanding of significant development projects and initiatives in the greater Durban area, and their associated timelines and implications for Business;
  • To maintain an awareness of issues relating to the main components of infrastructure, namely water, sanitation, refuse management, energy, communications and transport, and share relevant information with the members;
  • To pro-actively engage with government to facilitate decision-making, and approvals with minimal delays; and
  • To promote sustainability in design and application.

08. Human Resources

We ensure that the Durban Chamber’s view on human resources related, labour affairs and social policy matters are communicated to business organisations and government

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To enable the Forum to formulate position papers, comments and recommended policies in respect of human resources, labour affairs and social policy matters;
  • To ensure that the Chamber’s view on human resources-related, labour affairs and social policy matters are communicated to business organisations and government;
  • To formulate human resources guidelines for use by members regarding policies and procedures, on a pro-active basis;
  • To facilitate the sharing and dissemination of current, relevant HR/IR information;
  • When appropriate, to meet with unions or union groupings, to address matters of mutual interest; and
  • To encourage networking among HR/IR professionals.

09. TRADE AND INVESTMENT

We promote Durban as an effective trading hub by understanding the policy environment, the mechanisms and special vehicles.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To promote Durban as an effective trading hub;
  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of the policy environment, mechanisms and special purpose vehicles, promoted and resourced by the DTI and EDTEA and expressed as the Provincial Growth and Development Plan, clusters, innovation hubs and corridors for development; 
  • Promote export trade through the DCCI Exporter of the Year Awards, as is major contributory event for the year.

10. SAFETY AND JUSTICE

We formulate a deeper understanding of safety issues facing the city and identify synergies to tackle crime and grime in eThekwini.

11. SMME FORUM

Provide information on issues affecting SMME ‘s and linkages with providers of economic opportunities.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES
  • To foster a closer working relationship with SMME stakeholders at a local, regional and national level;
  • To facilitate discussions which deal with issues that are inhibitive to SMME development;
  • To ensure a vibrant interaction with subject matter experts, as they would relate to the SMME sector;
  • To enhance business linkages with providers of economic opportunities to the SMME sector; and
  • To make recommendations and lobby on behalf of SMMEs on issues that affect the sector.

12. NON PROFIT ORGANISATION

We provide skills development sessions for NPO members. Exploitation of synergies between member NPOs with the membership of the Durban Chamber in CSI initiatives.
