About this Event
Presentation: The Impact of COVID-19 Regulations and the Industry Response.
Presented by Theo Boshoff, Head: Legal Intelligence at Agricultural Business Chamber (AgBiz).
Since South Africa entered into lockdown on 27 March, much of the primary and secondary agricultural industries have continued to operate as essential services. This has allowed South Africa to remain food secure and shielded the sector, to a limited extent, from the worst of the economic fallout. That being said, the sector has not escaped unscathed. Various non-food commodities experienced restrictions and limitation whilst the sector as a whole has been affected by restrictions on support services and reduced market demand due to restrictions on restaurants, liquor products and tobacco in particular. The lockdown also coincided with the beginning of the citrus season and record harvests in summer grains and table grapes. Whilst positive, this place has placed huge demands on logistics and port services that are operating at reduced level. The presentation will unpack the impact which COVID 19 and its related restrictions have had on key agricultural commodities, food security, the response measures being developed between Business and Government on a national scale and how this can be applied at a local and provincial scale.
