Online Certificate of Origin
We issue Certificates of Origin (COO), an international trade document that attests that goods are wholly manufactured and produced in a particular country and promote growth along the value chain. We are now online with the new Certificate of Origin platform which is faster and more cost-efficient. In 2018, we issued 30425 Certificate of Origin documents.
essDOCS, operates the world’s most substantial electronic Certificate of Origin network, including more than 200 Chambers of Commerce and over 33,000 Exporters and Freight Forwarders, issuing eCOs out of 12 export countries and receiving eCOs into 203 import countries.
By using essCert eCOs, our members and business users can apply for, sign, stamp and receive back original electronic Certificates of Origin, eliminating time-consuming and inefficient, manual paper-based processes. The Durban Chamber is excited about introducing this tool, and we hope that the exporters across the province and South Africa who utilise our services benefit from the streamlined efficiencies this tool will add to our overall value proposition.
Trade Agreements in Africa
The trade and investment department accelerates government-to-government relations and mechanisms to advance a developmental agenda in Africa that focuses on:
- Identifying and establishing joint investment projects in partner countries
- Promoting two-way trade
- Coordinating South African technical cooperation and assistance to support policy and institutional development in partner countries
- Promoting cross-border infrastructure development, notably on the basis of the SDI methodology
- Promoting regional integration through the strengthening and consolidation of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) free trade agreement
- Negotiating agreements on investment protection and economic cooperation
Main Trade agreements
South Africa has signed many agreements with its trading partners in the past few years. The country is also a beneficiary of a number of non-reciprocal trade arrangements, among them the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Generalised System of Preferences.
