POST-PRESIDENTIAL ENGAGEMENT WITH PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA

26 February 2024

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC together with KZN Growth Coalition hosted President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday, 23 February 2024, to discuss the issues affecting businesses in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. The President was accompanied by a ministerial delegation comprising of Ministers Gordhan, Cele, Mchunu, Ramokgopa, and Zikalala.

At the engagement business leaders discussed and highlighted these four key strategic pillars towards recovery:

  1. Infrastructure restoration and enhancement < Water & Sanitation – Energy Distribution – Waste Management Parks
  2. Restoring Durban as a Tourist Destination
  3. Promoting KZN as an Investment Hub
  4. Safety and Security – Retaining the Skills

Our overall proposed request to the President and his Ministers in attendance at the meeting were the following:

  • An approve National Task Team to oversee Strategic Project implementation of Economic Recovery
  • National and Provincial Ownership
  • Quarterly Review with Private Sector – Progress Check on Strategic Pillars – Speed is of the Essence
  • National Promotion of investor confidence in KwaZulu-Natal

In response to the issues raised by business and suggestions proposed, President Cyril Ramaphosa committed to establishing a Presidential eThekwini Working Group which will include Ministers in the affected portfolios. As organised business, we believe this is a step in the right direction. It is time we needed the intervention of National Government to help solve the issues experienced locally. We are seeing implementation happen at a very slow pace by eThekwini Muncipality. Furthermore, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of consequence management and that individuals need to be held accountable for non-delivery.

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC firmly believes the Presidential eThekwini Working Group will provide an opportunity for National Government, eThekwini Municipality, and business to engage. For too long there has been misalignment in different spheres of government. The Presidential eThekwini Working Group will be mandated to present progress reports to the President regularly. As organised business we believe this platform will stimulate robust discussion, and promote transparency and accountability.
