DURBAN BUSINESS CONFIDENCE INDEX REPORT FOR QUARTER 4 2024

30 January 2025

THE DURBAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY NPC WELCOMES THE RELEASE OF THE DURBAN BUSINESS CONFIDENCE INDEX REPORT FOR QUARTER 4 2024

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC welcomes the release of the 2024 Quarter 4 Durban Business Confidence Index Report. The Durban Business Confidence Index for 2024 Quarter 4 was recorded at 60.74. As organised business, we believe the findings provide a true reflection of the mood of the business community in Durban. The report outlined that easing macroeconomic conditions together with government interventions to revitalize Durban sustained business confidence above the 50-point mark. While business confidence declined by 3.6% from Quarter 3 to Quarter 4, overall, it remains confident.

Although Durban has experienced positive results in terms of business confidence, the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC is aware that service delivery challenges still exist. A lot more needs to be done to attract and retain investment in our city. Businesses require a stable supply of water, safe roads, a clean environment and efficient waste removal services. Addressing service delivery challenges plays a crucial role in impacting business confidence in Durban. Efficient and reliable government services are significant for businesses to function effectively as well as to sustain the current business confidence levels.

As organised business, we are committed to addressing the following priorities through the Presidential eThekwini Working Group:

  1. Infrastructure challenges, which includes the stormwater network, water supply, sanitation, and electricity distribution.
  2. Safety and security, with a focus on addressing crime and urban decay in the inner city.
  3. Investment promotion to increase business confidence.
  4. Tourism, with a focus on revitalizing the tourism sector.

As organised business, we are confident that through collaboration and robust discussions between the private and public sector we will be able to make a difference and solve our challenges. There is a need for clear and direct conversations on delivery with private sector. Let us work together to make Durban a better place!

Founded in 1856, the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry NPC is the largest member-based metropolitan chamber in Southern Africa. We represent approximately 3,000 businesses in eThekwini and beyond, ranging from multinationals to corporates and SMMEs. Since 2019, we also represent 54,000 informal sector businesses through their business associations. Policy and advocacy are at the heart of our work and we assist members with securing trade and investment opportunities locally and internationally, providing business advisory services (CIPC, Certificate of Origin, ITC checks, HR consultancy and more) across a broad spectrum of sectors, engaging thought leadership through forum webinars and other networking events, sharing business information through digital platforms, and also sourcing business insights through occasional questionnaires. The Durban Chamber advocates and influences policy decisions that affect the interests of business (tax legislation, import and export regulations and more), offering member benefits and providing information relevant to business decision-making. As a business-based and member-focused organisation, our strategic purpose is to help create a conducive economic and business environment to facilitate and promote economic growth in the region in partnership with key stakeholders.
